2024 Scholarship Recipients

Jacob Joyner is a junior in GWU studying Math with a concentration in pure math, and getting a minor in GWTeach. Going for licensure for math education. His hobbies include learning the most obscure skills he will never use again and buying math books from Barnes and Nobles all across the east coast. Though most importantly if you ever need to find him, either go to a Gelman graduate study room or to the library of congress as he is most likely in one of those two places. If not found in these two locations, when he is found it will come with a great story.

Carter Ohline is a Senior at GW, studying Pure Mathematics, which a double minor in STEM Education and Psychology, going for his licensure for secondary math education. When not working on his endless homework, he can be found reading a book, working on a television show at GW-TV, or working as a summer camp counselor. 

2023 Scholarship Recipients

Mia Chu is a senior majoring in Cellular and Molecular Biology and minoring in Chemistry and STEM Teaching, with teaching licensure in Biology and Chemistry.

Ethan Collins is a junior at George Washington University, where he studies Interdisciplinary Mathematics with a double minor in Physics and STEM Teaching through the GWTeach program. For him, Math is a challenge which endlessly humbles him with its complexity, beauty, and frustration. He believes that anyone can be good at math, as long as they have the patience of a saint, the determination of a Greek hero, or a teacher with both those things and a lot of time. In his free time, he watches American and Japanese animation to escape from reality- he means to study cultural differences. He also believes that this should have been an “autobiography” rather than just a biography. 

Sonya Gelfand is a senior majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in Biology and STEM Teaching, with teaching licensure in Biology and Chemistry. As an aspiring STEM educator, her goal is to help emphasize that science is accessible to all students regardless of their background, interests, or academic strengths. She believes that science is beautiful to everyone in their own way!

Eva Schneiderlochner is a junior majoring in Chemistry and minoring in STEM teaching with licensure in chemistry. As part of her chemistry major, she performs research with the Cahill Group at GW, focusing on f-block chemistry. Eva views chemistry as a means to explain the natural world and help solve man-made problems. She hopes to educate students on the breadth of opportunities, connections to society, and develop their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. 

Emily Sullivan is a senior majoring in Biophysics and minors in Chemistry and STEM Teaching, with teaching licensure in Physics. She has always been interested in STEM since a young age, and she hopes to inspire our future generation of STEM students. She wants to especially focus on making the field of physics more diverse and making physics less “scary” for students to learn.

2022 Scholarship Recipients

Brooke Cody is a senior at GW from Long Island, New York who is majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in STEM Teaching. She is pursuing her teaching licensure through the GWTeach program to gain certification in Biological science. Since being at GW, Brooke has worked as an undergraduate TA in an introductory biology laboratory and is assisting clinical research with dementia patients in nursing homes. Brooke enjoys involvement in a variety of activities on and off campus including music, athletics, and sorority. She is excited to see where her future in the educational field takes her and is grateful for the opportunity to provide students support and encouragement to grow as individuals throughout their academic experiences. 

Olivia Dwyer is originally from West Springfield, Massachusetts majoring in Political Science and Minoring in STEM Education. She is pursuing a science teaching certification through GWTeach and can’t wait to bring her learning to the classroom upon graduation. On campus, Olivia is the Director of Finance for the GW Residence Hall Association and works as a Peer Mediator for Residence Life as well as a Team Leader in the early education program, Jumpstart. In her free time, Olivia enjoys crochet, spending time with friends and family, and exploring different communities in the DMV.

Sarah Mann is a junior from Hightstown, New Jersey majoring in Mathematics and minoring in STEM Teaching. She is pursuing a teaching certificate in secondary mathematics through GWTeach. Sarah is a lead tutor for the Math Matters program providing high-impact math tutoring to middle school students in DCPS. In her free time, Sarah enjoys drawing, painting, and exploring new areas of DC.

Stephanie Myers is a senior from Cinnaminson, New Jersey majoring in Political Science and Economics with a minor in STEM Teaching. Through the GW Teach program and with the help of the Noyce Program, she is pursuing her teaching certification in high school mathematics. On campus, Stephanie is a member of the GW Figure Skating Team. In her free time, she enjoys trying new food, hanging out with her cats, and spending time outside in DC.

Rachel Worsham is a senior from Long Island completing a BS in Political Science. She is minoring in Mathematics and STEM teaching to earn her teacher certification through GWTeach and with support from the Noyce program. While living in the district, Rachel enjoys trying out new restaurants and taking walks on the National Mall. In her spare time, she enjoys playing piano, reading, and creative writing.

2021 Scholarship Recipients

Nora Cavanaugh is a senior majoring in Biology pursuing a teaching license. She has thoroughly enjoyed learning about inquiry-based approaches to teaching STEM subjects through the GWTeach program and is honored to continue these studies with the help of the Noyce program. Nora is most excited about improving her questioning skills, learning how to help students develop questions based on their genuine interests and incorporating misconception research into lesson plans. Nora is also interested in plant ecology and mystery novels with female protagonists.

Avani Gandhi is a senior from Wayne, PA majoring in Psychological & Brain Sciences and Pure Mathematics. She is minoring in STEM teaching and getting certified through GW Teach in secondary mathematics (grades 7-12). Avani loves music and is the secretary of GW Bands. She plays oboe in GW’s symphonic band and alto saxophone in GW’s pep band, Cbrass. When not playing music, she can be found hiking, doing jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with her friends in DC.

Alex Lambert is a senior from New Gloucester, Maine. She is majoring in Biology with a minor in STEM Teaching and is also pursuing a teaching certification in high school biology and through the GW Teach program. Alex thoroughly enjoys working as a peer mentor in the GW Teach office and reading her peers’ lesson plans. In her off time, Alex enjoys baking, crocheting, and reading.

Anna McDonald-Martin is a junior from Cambridge, Massachusetts majoring in Cell & Molecular Biology and double minoring in Criminal Justice and STEM Teaching. She is currently pursuing a science teaching certification through GWTeach and looks forward to teaching upon graduation. On-campus, Anna is a peer health educator through the Capital Peers Stress Management & Emotional Well-Being task force, and a math tutor through the Petey Greene Program. In her spare time, Anna loves exploring new restaurants, museums, and dog parks with friends and family.

Mia Parker is a junior from Leakesville, Mississippi. She is majoring in economics with minors in math and STEM teaching. She is pursuing her teaching certificate in secondary mathematics. On campus, Mia is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity and the GW cheer team. In her free time, she can be found completing the New York Times crossword, exploring the neighborhoods in D.C, and researching US tax law.

2020 Scholarship Recipients

Alexa Miller-Smith is a fourth-year student from Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  She is majoring in economics and political science with a minor in STEM teaching.  Next year Alexa will be teaching middle school math in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.  On campus Alexa is on the varsity rowing team, in GW’s community service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, and works for the Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service as the team leader of a tutoring program for DC public school students.  In her free time Alexa enjoys reading, finding new spots to eat in DC, and going to the beach.

Nathan Yohn is a junior from Milford, Massachusetts. He is majoring in real estate with minors in mathematics and STEM teaching. He is pursuing his teaching certificate in middle school mathematics through the GW Teach program. While in DC, he enjoys working at Mathnasium where he tutors students in mathematics, and while he is at home, he enjoys working at an assisted living facility where he runs activities. When not in class or at work, he can be found doing puzzles or binging the latest show on Netflix.

2019 Scholarship Recipients

Jordan Bower is a junior from Westfield, Massachusetts. She is majoring in Geography with a minor in Astrophysics and Astronomy as well as STEM Teaching. Jordan is pursuing her teaching certificate in General Science through the GWTeach program. When she is not in class, she can be found volunteering with her friends in GWU’s community service sorority, ESA, or playing the piano.

Deema Kahwash is a sophomore studying mathematics, and STEM education with GWTeach. She is from Charleston, West Virginia, where she grew up in a Montessori school that inspired her to pursue education. This past summer, she worked at a democratic school in New York City called Pono, where students decide the curriculum and the rules! Deema enjoys rainy days, reading, and cooking after a busy day.

Alison Pagalilauan is a junior from Freehold, New Jersey majoring in Biology with a concentration in Cellular and Molecular Biology and minoring in STEM Teaching. On campus, Alison hosts a talk show on WRGW District Radio and is an active member of Fraternity and Sorority Life. She works as a Peer Coach in STEMworks and a Learning Assistant for introductory biology courses. In her spare time, Alison enjoys long walks at the mall and on Saturday mornings at the Natural History Museum.

Fiona Walsh is a Junior from Northern Kentucky.  She studies mathematics and STEM Teaching with GWTeach. Her passions lie in sharing the fun of mathematics and making the subject accessible to all. This past summer, Fiona was a Teaching Fellow at Breakthrough Cincinnati, where she taught mathematics and a STEM long-term project. When she is not in class or working at Panera Bread, she loves to cook and watch Jeopardy!

2018 Scholarship Recipients

Nathalya Ramirez, Biophysics Major with a STEAM Teaching Minor, is the first Noyce Scholarship recipient at George Washington University. She was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia. While at GW, she was involved in student organizations. Nathalya was a part of the Society of Physics Students, GW PorColombia, GW ClubTennis, and a member of the Greek community among others. She has worked for the Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service as well as a learning assistant for introductory Physics courses. Nathalya spends her free time biking, playing with her cat, and doing community service. Nathalya graduated in May 2019 and currently works as a teacher in Queens.
